As parents struggle to help their adhd, add and high functioning aspergers children, they are presented with a huge amount of confusing information.  Parents have a crucial set of questions about ADHD that they need answered. This page is an attempt to answer those in a clear, straightforward, useful way. These answers combine my review of the scientific literature and  over 35 years of clinical experience helping these children and their families.

Each section can be explored using the hyperlinks in the left-hand column.

DRUGS  One of the first, and often the most avidly promoted treatment is stimulant. antidepressant or antipsychotic medications.  Schools often suggest a referral to a pediatrician for stimulant drugs such as Ritalin, Concerta, Dexedrine, Adderall, Metadate, Strattera, Focalin,  or Attenade; antidepressant such as Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft and more recently the antipsychotic Risperdal.

Be cautious. Drug research is biased.   The efficacy of drug treatment is increasingly being questioned by the scientific community. See these articles:

There is a highly effective treatment alternative to Metadate.

For over 35 years I have worked with ADHD children and their families. Having been an  ADHD child myself, I have a personal interest in this area.

Current explanations of the disorder never fit my experience or the children I saw. It always seemed contradictory that children who could not attend to school work could play computer games for hours, though both activities use the same areas of the brain. This stimulated years of  research and rethinking  of ADHD theory and treatment.  From this I developed my new (patented) and highly effective, drug free, Computer Aided Emotional Restructuring (CAER) treatment  and wrote my book, ADHD: A Path to Success to explain it. Learn how ADHD is not a defect, deficit or a disorder, but a highly skilled short-term defense mechanism that backfires in the long-run. Read more than 40 Amazon.com “customer reviews” of my book and treatment.   The most typical response when people read the book is “That makes so much more sense than anything else I have read”, “You describe my child exactly”.

It will empower you  an optimistic lens that will forever change how you see your child and his problems.
