Behavior Modification
Behavior modification is a key part of most drug-free adhd
treatment approaches, because it has long been used and
known by another name, good parenting. It is nothing more than the
systematic application of common sense wrapped in psychology's brand name,
behavior modification.
This is not to underplay the tremendous amount of systematic research
that has been conducted that document its positive effects, or if you
will, the positive effects of good parenting. I just want to
make the point that there is nothing really new, magical or not commonly
known in this technology. It is the systematic rigorousness of this
approach to ADHD that makes the difference.
The hooker in behavioral programs is the “systematic” part of the
paradigm. Most parents of add children I work with have already tried many variations of
behavior treatment, without success. This treatment only
works if it is consistently applied. Getting it right sometimes or
not always getting it wrong, will not work.
So what is the difficulty with systematically applying behavioral
treatment? The typical problems is that applying its methods of good
parenting often tap into emotions related to similar actions or situations
in the parent’s own life. For example, if one is feeling stressed at
work, it is very difficult for this not to be carried home and
have those feelings interfere with parenting, no matter how hard you try.
This makes the parent feels bad when they
take appropriate parenting action. Ultimately, parents are not going to do
what feels bad, no matter what they know is good parenting. Thus, parents
are often inconsistent.
There is a highly effective treatment alternative to drugs.
For over 35 years I have worked with ADHD children
and their families. Having been an ADHD child myself, I have a personal
interest in this area.
Current explanations of the disorder never fit my
experience or the
children I saw. It always seemed contradictory that
children who could not attend to school work could play computer games for
hours, though both activities use the same areas of the brain. This stimulated years
of research and rethinking of ADHD theory and treatment.
From this I developed my new (patented) and highly effective, drug free, Computer Aided Emotional
Restructuring (CAER) treatment and wrote my book,
ADHD: A Path to Success to explain it.
Learn how ADHD is not a defect,
deficit or a disorder, but a highly skilled short-term
defense mechanism that backfires in the long-run. Read more than 40 Amazon.com “customer reviews” of my book
and treatment. The most
typical response when people read the book is “That makes so much more
sense than anything else I have read”, “You describe my child exactly”.
It will empower you
an optimistic lens that will forever change how you see your child and his
problems.
